1787.10.12 76th Regiment of Foot
raised by EIC for service in India when war with the French was imminent, but, the danger having passed, EIC refused to support or embark the regiment, whereupon Parliament passed the East India Declaratory Act requiring that troops deemed necessary for the security of overseas territories be supported by revenues from those territories (see also 74th Foot, 75th Foot, and 77th Foot)

Note: In 1808 the Governor General of India presented the regiment an Honorary Stand of Colours, inscribed with the battle honours "Ally Ghur", "Delhi", "Agra", and "Leswaree", "Hindoostan" and the Elephant badge, for service as the only British infantry in Lord Lake's campaign of 1803-05. These Colours have been replaced four times (1830, 1888, 1908, and 1969).
